The road that leads you to zest for life in the Thermen- & Vulkanland

the Vulkanland Route 66

Running straight across much of the USA, crossing vast, endless expanses, Route 66 is one of the most famous highways in the world. Over in Austria, its namesake in the Thermen- & Vulkanland rolls past an incredible wealth of culinary and artisan highlights.

Packed along the 80 km route or situated just off it are all sorts of interactive factories and authentic family-run businesses where visitors can sample the wares, spend a few hours, and take home some souvenirs.

On Route 66, everything is geared towards gourmet pleasure in the truest sense of the word. Every kilometre reveals new attractions in a seemingly endless landscape of culinary adventure:

Well-known gourmet stops, such as the Zotter Chocolate Adventure World, the Fromagerie (Austria’s first cheese art and ripening factory), Gölles (a factory for fine brandies and vinegars), the Vulcano Schinkenmanufaktur (ham factory) or even the Berghofermühle (flour mill) in Fehring, to name but a few.

It’s also well worth exploring smaller producers who specialise in niche products, for example Kober organic chokeberry farm, Koller pumpkin farm and workshop, Maika coffee roasting house, or the exciting Vulkanland snail farm.

But perhaps it’s big-style regional food shopping you’re after? Once again Route 66 offers a vast selection – there’s the Bauernstadl food hall in Feldbach with products from over 200 different suppliers, the Greislerei Merin in Straden, or even the Murkostladen in Mureck, which spans 170 m² and features over 3,000 hand-picked suppliers.

Discovering wine in a wine wonderland: You simply can’t avoid wine on Route 66. Winegrowers with vineyards big and small are scattered across the entire Thermen- & Vulkanland. There’s a fine drop of red or white or even sparkling wine to try around every corner. Wine lovers absolutely mustn’t miss a visit to the Gesamtsteirische Vinothek, which stocks 220 wines from a whole host of winegrowers.

Culinary delights close enough to taste!

Route 66 is celebrated for its wealth of interactive factories – probably the highest density in the world! Countless culinary factories are only too pleased to open their doors and let you be a part of these regional specialities. Look – Try – Love!

90 "Lebenslustzeichen"

Besides the countless culinary discoveries, Route 66 also has plenty of art-related experiences to bring to your attention. Around 90 creative “Lebenslustzeichen” (“zest for life signs” that look like information boards) adorn Route 66: something for explorers to admire, to smile at, and even be inspired by. Also in the pipeline are giant gateways, designed to greet visitors as they ride into a land of ‘milk and honey’. The internationally acclaimed staging expert Andreas Stern is responsible for the artistic representation.
